A HOUSE FOR ARTISTS
resident, artist, workshop facilitator, branding designer
A House for Artists is my current long-term residency.
It is an ambitious model for affordable and sustainable housing tied to long-term public engagement in Barking Town Centre. Together, me and 14 other artists, residing across 12 flats above a communal space, aim to deliver a new model for arts participation, forming both a community inside the building and within the local area.
As residents, we maintain shared and individual studio spaces for our own practices and provide a free public programme of events for the local community. We also navigate deeper topics around communal living, working and sharing space, including safeguarding, fair working practices, conflict resolution, and more. We maintain a relationship with the local LBBD council, Create London, and APPARATA architects who designed the building.
Since moving into A House for Artists in May 2022, I have:
built a gourmet mushroom micro-farm
delivered craft workshops
assisted ceramic learning courses
hosted celebrations
created branding for Living Clay (the house's ceramic studio)
created branding for Barking Community Cinema (the house's community cinema)
borrowed many power tools from my neighbours.
